Brass Quintet and Brass Chamber Ensemble Competition Information
International Brass Chamber Music Festival
University of Louisville School of Music

October 11th through 14th, 2008

Host Ensemble
Louisville Brass is the resident brass chamber ensemble at the University of Louisville School of Music. Comprised exclusively of School of Music faculty, Louisville Brass is committed to artistic performance and to the sharing of knowledge of literature and styles through clinics and master classes. The ensemble is well-versed in a wide range of styles, and the repertoire list ranges from the Renaissance to jazz. The members of Louisville Brass are Michael Tunnell and Herbert Koerselman, trumpets; Bruce Heim, horn; Brett Shuster, trombone; and John Jones, tuba.

The festival will host several top ranking brass ensembles. International Trumpet Guild Journal calls Spanish Brass "one of the most exciting and artistic brass quintets to come on the scene in recent years... a gloriously brilliant performance." Diane Wright with The Herald in Everett, Washington says of Proteus 7 that "these young musicians have an ease of playing and a genuine respect that makes you realize how vital it is for young people to see such groups." Gary Barrow of the ITG Journal writes of Sonus Brass, "sounds as tight as any brass quintet around!…consistently strong performances and energetic spirit…an exemplar in the fundamentals of quality ensemble playing." Bieler Tagblatt of Switzerland says of Øystein Baadsvik that his "playing is distinguished by a slim, noble tone, absolute technical security and a perfect intonation. View Øystein Baadsvik's performance on Fnugg Blue on YouTube.

Spanish Brass, Proteus 7 and Sonus Brass will be providing workshops as well as concerts.

Original Repertoire for Brass Quintet with Lauren Bernofsky and Clint Needham
This session will include performances of original repertoire and recommendations concerning programming and composing from two prominent brass quintet/brass chamber music composers.

Clint Needham is currently a Jacobs School of Music Doctoral Fellow in composition at Indiana University. He received a BM in composition from Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory and an MM from Indiana University, and has studied with Claude Baker, David Dzubay, Per Mårtensson, P.Q. Phan, Sven-David Sandström, Richard Wernick, and Loris Chobanian. Clint has also studied with Robert Beaser, Sydney Hodkinson, Christopher Rouse, and George Tsontakis at the Aspen Music Festival as a Susan and Ford Schumann Composition Fellow. Clint’s music has been performed by the American Brass Quintet, American Composers Orchestra, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, New York Youth Symphony and the Oberon Trio, among others.

Lauren Bernofsky began her musical training at age seven as a violinist, and she was later introduced to composition while studying at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts. She holds a bachelor's degree in violin and composition from the Hartt School of Music, a master's degree in composition from the New England Conservatory, and a doctorate in composition from Boston University. She has written music for ensembles ranging from solo instruments to chamber music to symphony orchestra. Dr. Bernofsky has been the recipient of numerous commissions, and her compositions have been performed across the United States as well as in Canada, Norway, Germany, Wales, Iceland, New Zealand, and Australia.
